Building Connection and Community with Bella Zemel of Matched Beyond Labels

Building Connection Beyond Labels: How Matched Beyond Labels Helps Neurodivergent Adults Find Friendship, Confidence, and Belonging

For many neurodivergent adults, finding meaningful friendships and relationships can come with unique challenges. Traditional social settings can feel overwhelming, and the fear of rejection or being misunderstood can make it difficult to take the first step.

That’s the need Bella Zemel set out to address when she founded Matched Beyond Labels, an organization focused on helping neurodivergent adults build friendships, confidence, and meaningful connections in a safe and supportive environment.

In a recent episode of the Grit Won’t Quit podcast, Bella joined Tom to talk about her inspiration for creating Matched Beyond Labels, how the organization works, and the powerful impact she has already seen among its members.

From Education to Creating a Community

Bella’s path to Matched Beyond Labels began with her background in education and working with children with special needs.

As she worked with young people, she often wondered what would happen when they grew into adulthood.

“Where are those children now?” became an important question for Bella. She wondered whether they were finding friendships, building relationships, finding love, and creating the connections that are such an important part of adult life.

Her curiosity led her to research resources available to neurodivergent adults. She quickly discovered that there were far fewer resources focused on helping adults develop meaningful social connections.

Bella was also hearing difficult stories from families and friends. Some neurodivergent adults were attending events alone, struggling to make friends, or experiencing repeated rejection when they tried to form connections.

She knew there was an opportunity to create something different.

Inspired by Love on the Spectrum

Bella’s idea was partly inspired by the television show Love on the Spectrum. After watching the show, she wondered why similar opportunities weren’t available to people who didn’t want to appear on television or be in the spotlight.

Initially, Bella envisioned Matched Beyond Labels primarily as a dating organization.

But once the program began, she discovered something important: many members were looking for friendship and connection just as much as—or even more than—romantic relationships.

That realization helped shape the organization into what it is today: a friendship-first community where relationships can develop naturally over time.

Friendship Comes First

One of the central ideas behind Matched Beyond Labels is that meaningful relationships don’t have to begin with dating.

Friendships can be the foundation for confidence, trust, communication, and eventually romantic relationships for those who want them.

Members are encouraged to connect around shared interests and experiences rather than being immediately pushed toward traditional dating.

This approach gives people the opportunity to become comfortable with one another and develop genuine relationships at their own pace.

As Bella explained during the podcast, the ultimate goal may be helping members find romantic relationships, but the process of getting there is just as important.

Creating a Safe Place to Be Yourself

A major part of Matched Beyond Labels is creating an environment where members can be themselves without feeling pressured to mask or conform.

For neurodivergent adults, social situations can sometimes come with the expectation of behaving in ways that don’t feel natural. Bella wants Matched Beyond Labels to offer a different experience—a place where members know they belong.

The organization creates opportunities for members to interact, share experiences, discover common interests, and build relationships in an environment designed around support and understanding.

That sense of belonging can be transformative.

How Matched Beyond Labels Helps Members Connect

Matched Beyond Labels uses a thoughtful process to help members find compatible connections.

The program is designed as a one-year experience because Bella recognizes that meaningful relationships and confidence take time to develop.

When someone joins, they participate in an intake session where the team learns about their interests, preferences, goals, sensory needs, and other factors that can help them feel comfortable and understood.

From there, members participate in events where they can interact with others.

The team pays attention to how members interact and uses their interests and goals to strategically create groups where they may have things in common.

The goal isn’t simply to put people in a room together. It’s to create opportunities where meaningful conversations and connections are more likely to happen.

Turning Online Conversations Into Real Friendships

Online events are an important part of the Matched Beyond Labels community, especially because members can participate from different locations.

During these events, members are often divided into smaller groups and given conversation topics designed to encourage interaction.

For example, one activity challenged participants to find three things they had in common with everyone in their group and then share something unique about themselves.

These seemingly simple activities can make a significant difference.

They help members discover common ground and demonstrate that they may have more in common with other people than they initially realize.

And sometimes, those conversations lead to something more.

After events, members may reach out to Bella and say that they enjoyed talking with another participant and would like to connect with them.

That’s where Matched Beyond Labels provides another important layer of support.

The “Wingman” Approach

For some members, the hardest part of making a connection isn’t deciding that they like someone—it’s figuring out what to do next.

Fear of rejection, uncertainty, and social anxiety can make those next steps feel overwhelming.

Matched Beyond Labels helps bridge that gap.

Bella and her team can facilitate introductions and help members navigate some of the awkward parts of connecting with someone new.

As Tom jokingly described it during the podcast, the organization acts like a “wingman.”

It’s a fitting description. Members don’t have to navigate every difficult social step alone.

Small Steps Can Lead to Major Breakthroughs

Perhaps the most powerful part of Bella’s work is seeing how seemingly small social experiences can create major changes in someone’s confidence.

Bella shared the story of a member whose anxiety had previously made it extremely difficult for him to attend social events. His mother told Bella that he would sometimes become physically ill from anxiety and couldn’t leave the house.

After joining Matched Beyond Labels, things began to change.

Seven months later, he was looking forward to attending the organization’s events. More importantly, he had developed enough confidence to attend another social event outside the organization.

His mother told Bella that she hadn’t seen that side of him in approximately 10 years.

For Bella, that was a powerful reminder that success isn’t always about finding a date or entering a relationship.

Sometimes success is simply feeling confident enough to walk through the door.

When Someone Experiences a New Feeling for the First Time

Bella also shared another memorable story about a member who had recently started connecting with a woman.

He called Bella because he was excited—and confused—by the feelings he was experiencing.

He told her that he didn’t understand what he was feeling because he had never experienced it before, but he knew that he loved it.

For Bella, moments like that are exactly why Matched Beyond Labels exists.

It’s about giving people opportunities to experience friendship, excitement, connection, confidence, and belonging—sometimes for the first time.

Growing From Online Community to In-Person Events

Matched Beyond Labels currently has members from different parts of Canada and the United States, with online programming making it possible for people outside the Greater Toronto Area to participate.

The organization’s long-term vision is much bigger.

Bella wants Matched Beyond Labels to eventually have a presence in communities across Canada, the United States, and beyond.

The organization plans to build online communities first and then introduce in-person events as enough members join a particular geographic area.

Once an area reaches a critical number of members, the goal is to create opportunities for them to meet in person and continue building the relationships that started online.

Building a More Complete Life

Bella sees friendship and dating as important pieces of a much bigger picture.

A fulfilling adult life can include employment, family, friendships, romantic relationships, community, and a sense of purpose.

If one of those pieces is missing, it can create a significant gap.

Matched Beyond Labels is focused on helping bridge one of those gaps: meaningful social connection.

By creating opportunities for neurodivergent adults to meet people who understand them, develop friendships, build confidence, and explore relationships, the organization is helping members create fuller and more connected lives.

A Vision That Goes Beyond One City

Matched Beyond Labels has already begun reaching beyond its original Greater Toronto Area community.

Bella discussed potential expansion into other Canadian cities, as well as U.S. locations such as New York and Boston, where there are already members interested in the community.

The broader vision is to eventually make this type of support available wherever neurodivergent adults are looking for connection.

It’s an ambitious goal, but the early success of the organization shows why there is a need for it.

Creating Belonging, One Connection at a Time

At its heart, Matched Beyond Labels isn’t simply about dating.

It’s about belonging.

It’s about creating a place where people can meet others, discover shared interests, develop friendships, gain confidence, and know that they have a community supporting them.

For some members, that might eventually lead to a romantic relationship. For others, it might mean finding their first real friend group, attending a social event independently, or simply feeling comfortable enough to be themselves around other people.

Those are meaningful accomplishments.

As Bella continues to grow Matched Beyond Labels, her mission remains centered on helping neurodivergent adults experience the connections and sense of community that everyone deserves.
