From Bankruptcy to Breakthrough: The Grit Behind Dan Sachkowsky’s Comeback
In this episode of Grit Won’t Quit, host Tom Mirabella sits down with Dan Sachkowsky — founder of DS Legacy Group and The Big D Podcast — to unpack his raw, powerful journey through entrepreneurship’s highest highs and lowest lows.
At just 17 years old, Dan launched his first construction company. Fueled by ambition and a hunger to escape humble beginnings, he built a thriving business by his mid-20s, complete with luxury cars, a big house, and all the trappings of success. But when the 2008 market crash hit, everything changed overnight.
“I knew how to make money,” Dan says. “I just didn’t know how to keep it.”
Losing Everything—and Finding Purpose
After the crash, Dan faced bankruptcy, betrayal, and even a robbery that wiped out his savings. Yet, through every setback, he refused to quit.
Those years, he explains, taught him that chasing money doesn’t create real success. “At some point, you have to stop chasing cash and start chasing purpose,” he says. “Money’s secondary. The real wealth is in integrity, perseverance, and growth.”
Dan rebuilt—multiple times—eventually creating and selling several construction companies before pivoting into coaching. His focus shifted from building homes to building people. Today, through DS Legacy Group, he helps business owners scale smarter, develop systems, and build companies that work for them, not the other way around.
Coaching Built on Real Experience
Dan’s coaching programs stem from his real-world experience, not theory. He’s lived the burnout, the bad hires, and the long nights of doing it all yourself.
His approach? Brutal honesty and accountability. “I’m not for everyone,” he admits. “I tell people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.”
From mastermind groups that bring entrepreneurs together quarterly, to individualized coaching that helps contractors and service business owners scale beyond the “glorified job” stage, Dan’s programs are built on results.
“My clients see 2–3X growth in a year,” he says. “If you do the work, I’ll work with you until you get there.”
The Mindset Shift: From Control to Growth
One of the biggest challenges business owners face, Dan and Tom agree, is learning to let go.
“So many entrepreneurs say, ‘No one can do it as good as me,’” Dan says. “That’s the most selfish thing you can believe. You’re holding yourself back.”
Together, they discuss the power of delegation, building systems, and hiring up—investing in higher-level talent to create stronger, more sustainable growth. “If your business can’t run without you,” Dan adds, “you don’t own a business—you own a job.”
A Mission to Inspire
Today, Dan’s mission goes beyond business. He’s a speaker, mentor, and motivator who’s been through it all—and now shares his lessons on stages around the country and through his two podcasts: The Big D Podcast and The Intrepidus Podcast (which means “fearless” in Latin).
Both platforms explore what it takes to push through fear, overcome adversity, and redefine what success really means.
“Most people want to grow,” Dan says. “But they’re surrounded by people who want to be carried, not those who want to run with them. You have to separate from the past to build your future.”
