Turning Policies into Partnerships: How Dan Trucano Is Redefining Insurance for Business Owners
In an industry often seen as cold and transactional, Dan Trucano of Couch Braunsdorf Insurance Group brings a refreshing approach rooted in relationships, trust, and real-world protection. In a recent episode of Grit Won’t Quit, Dan sat down with host Tom Mirabella to talk about his journey—from growing up on Long Island to becoming a go-to resource for business insurance across the Jersey Shore.
Dan didn’t always plan on following in the insurance footsteps of his family. In fact, he was the only sibling who swore he’d never get into the industry. But after graduating college in 2008 during a tough economic climate, an opportunity at Liberty Mutual changed everything. What started as a reluctant step into insurance became a full-fledged career path fueled by genuine connection and a drive to help people protect what matters most.
The Shift to Entrepreneurship—With a Safety Net
After spending several years in territory sales, Dan realized he was giving away relationships that could’ve been the foundation of his own book of business. That realization—along with some encouragement from industry peers—led him to make the leap to Couch Braunsdorf. There, he found the sweet spot: the independence of running his own practice with the backing of a well-resourced, supportive agency.
“This just was a good spot for me,” Dan said. “I can serve clients the way I want to—with honesty, accessibility, and real solutions.”
Bringing the Human Side to Insurance
Dan thrives on relationships. Whether it’s walking laps around his house while taking client calls or building collaborative business groups that feel more like a trusted team than a networking club, he prioritizes communication and accessibility.
“A lot of business owners tell me they haven’t talked to their broker in a year,” Dan shared. “That’s not how I do things. You’ll get my cell number. I want to be available when you need me.”
That focus has earned him trust—and referrals. He’s grown his book of business by simply doing good work and connecting with other professionals who share that mindset.
Demystifying Cyber Insurance (And Why You Need It)
One of Dan’s biggest missions today is educating businesses on cyber insurance—coverage that’s often misunderstood, underutilized, or ignored altogether.
“It used to be a throw-in. Now it’s one of the most important things we talk about,” he explained. “Most cyberattacks aren’t hitting the big guys anymore. They’re hitting small businesses.”
Dan shared real-life examples of companies losing hundreds of thousands of dollars due to phishing, spoofed payment links, and ransomware—all of which could’ve been mitigated or reimbursed with the right coverage. Unlike traditional policies, cyber insurance doesn’t follow a standardized form, which makes it all the more important to work with someone who understands the nuances.
Why Relationships Win in Risk Management
At the end of the day, Dan doesn’t sell insurance—he sells peace of mind. And he does it by making the complex feel approachable and the process feel personal.
“I don’t talk about policy language unless someone asks. I talk in examples. I ask: what would it cost you if your system went down for four days? How would you make payroll? That’s when the value clicks.”
This no-nonsense, empathetic approach is exactly why so many business owners lean on Dan not just as a broker, but as a partner.
Advice for Aspiring Professionals
For those looking to break into the insurance world, Dan offers an encouraging outlook: “It’s an older industry with a lot of opportunity for younger people. You don’t have to jump all in—Couch Braunsdorf has a structure where you can learn, try out different departments, and really find your lane. It’s like a college for insurance.”
His advice for anyone nervous about taking the leap into entrepreneurship? “There’s never a perfect time. I had a newborn on the way when I jumped. But that pressure made me better—it gave me focus.”
What’s Next for Dan
Looking ahead, Dan plans to build out his personal brand with the help of Wingman Planning. He wants to close the gap between what people think he does and the value he actually brings—especially when it comes to business insurance.
“I’ve always kept what I do separate from who I am. Now, I’m ready to merge the two.”
He also teased a Spring “Lunch & Learn” focused on cyber insurance, inviting local business owners to get educated on one of the biggest risks they may be ignoring—all over some solid local food, of course.
