Seeds to Stocks: How a 12-Year-Old Turned Gardening Into a Growing Business
What started as a love for gardening at just four years old has blossomed into something much bigger for Gio, the 12-year-old behind GLG Gardens. With his dad, Justin, by his side, Gio has transformed a backyard hobby into a thriving pickle business—complete with lessons in farming, entrepreneurship, and even investing.
From Cucumbers to Pickles
It all began with a handful of cucumber seeds. Gio and Justin discovered just how abundant their garden could be when those seeds turned into baskets of cucumbers. Instead of letting the surplus go to waste, they began experimenting with pickling—something their family already loved. Soon, friends and neighbors were raving about the taste, and Gio realized he had something special on his hands.
Today, GLG Gardens produces both classic garlic pickles and a spicy version packed with jalapeños, habaneros, and red pepper flakes. As podcast host Tom Mirabella discovered on air, they’ve got the crunch, flavor, and just the right amount of heat to keep customers coming back year after year.
Cutting Costs & Streamlining the Process
Like any smart entrepreneur, Gio quickly learned that making great pickles wasn’t just about flavor—it was also about efficiency. Early on, they used mason jars that were rarely returned and costly labels that ate into profits. With some creative thinking, Gio suggested printing labels at home, cutting costs down to just pennies per jar.
Batch sizes grew too. Instead of making brine two or three times a week, they now use a turkey fryer to prepare large quantities, saving time and money. Add in growing their own garlic, dill, and peppers, and the family has created a system where quality is higher, costs are lower, and the entire process runs like clockwork.
Marketing Pickles in the Digital Age
For Gio, advertising starts with community. Repeat customers and word-of-mouth play a big role, but so does social media. Posting updates and announcements on Facebook has kept GLG Gardens connected to their growing fan base. Loyal buyers look forward to the “pickles are here” announcement each season, often placing orders as soon as the jars are ready.
Beyond Pickles: Investing in the Future
Perhaps the most impressive part of Gio’s journey is how he’s choosing to reinvest his profits. Rather than spending all of his earnings, he’s learning the basics of finance by buying stocks in companies he knows and trusts—like Amazon, Tesla, Netflix, and Disney. With encouragement from his dad, Gio is building not just a business, but also a foundation for future financial literacy.
Lessons for Entrepreneurs of All Ages
What Gio and Justin have built goes far beyond jars of pickles. It’s a real-life example of what it takes to run a business:
Start with what you love. Gio’s passion for gardening made the work enjoyable from the start.
Fine-tune every year. Each season, they improve their process, cut costs, and scale smarter.
Think long-term. From irrigation systems to stock investments, they’re building sustainability into everything they do.
Work as a team. With his dad, siblings, and even a little help from his brother on labeling, Gio has learned that teamwork is at the heart of success.
From seeds to stocks, Gio’s story is proof that entrepreneurship has no age limits. With creativity, persistence, and a willingness to learn, even the smallest backyard idea can grow into something extraordinary.
You can follow Gio’s journey and order GLG Gardens pickles through their Facebook page—just be warned, once you try the spicy ones, you’ll be hooked.
