When life takes an unexpected turn, some people retreat — but others rise. Kathleen Hala, founder of Senior In-Home Care Navigator, is one of those people. A Life-Changing Diagnosis
For decades, Kathleen built her career in home care — staffing, recruiting, marketing, and helping seniors access the support they needed. But in 2019, everything changed. During what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, she began experiencing alarming symptoms. Soon after returning home, she was unable to walk or speak and was rushed to the hospital. The diagnosis: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) — an unpredictable autoimmune disease that can attack any part of the body without warning.
“It was terrifying,” she recalls. “My life flipped upside down overnight. Everything I loved doing, I couldn’t do anymore.”
That diagnosis marked the beginning of a long and difficult recovery. Doctors, specialists, medications, and lifestyle adjustments became part of her daily routine. But amid the frustration and anger, Kathleen made a promise: if she could regain her strength, she would dedicate herself to helping others who were struggling — just as she had.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
Kathleen’s recovery didn’t just rebuild her health — it reshaped her perspective. As someone with decades of experience in senior care, she realized that if she had struggled to get answers and support, families without industry knowledge must feel completely lost.
“Families are often thrown into crisis mode,” she says. “They’re trying to manage their own lives while navigating complicated healthcare systems for their loved ones. They need an advocate — someone to fight for them.”
That realization led to the creation of Senior In-Home Care Navigator, a referral-based advocacy business that connects families with vetted care providers, answers complex questions about Medicare and Medicaid, and helps them make informed decisions. Kathleen personally interviews care companies and matches clients with services tailored to their specific needs — ensuring that seniors and their families receive compassionate, knowledgeable support.
Balancing Health and Entrepreneurship
Running a business while managing a chronic illness is no small feat. Some days, Kathleen feels unstoppable. Other days, lupus forces her to slow down. She’s learned to listen to her body, set boundaries, and work on her terms — often from home, and always with flexibility.
“There are days I’m at 100%, and days I’m not,” she says. “But I don’t let that stop me. Helping others has actually helped me heal.”
Her experience has also shaped how she approaches advocacy. Kathleen knows firsthand how overwhelming it can be to face medical uncertainty — and she channels that empathy into every client interaction. Her mission is simple: treat families the way she wishes she had been treated during her own journey.

Kathleen’s passion for advocacy extends beyond her business. She’s deeply involved with Motions, a nonprofit organization that supports families and young adults with disabilities in Monmouth and Ocean counties. From helping with job placement programs to organizing fundraising events, Kathleen is committed to expanding her impact and empowering more people through advocacy and education.
“It’s not about profit — it’s about purpose,” she says. “I wish I had someone like me when I was sick. That’s why I do what I do.”
