Matt Huss: Insurance Insights and Triathlon Triumphs

Finding Balance: Matt Huss on Business, Fitness & Community Leadership

In Episode #25 of Grit Won’t Quit, host Tom sits down with Matt Huss, the energetic new President of the Brick Chamber of Commerce and longtime agent at State Farm’s Huss Agency. The conversation dives into leadership, legacy, fitness, and the power of giving back. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a local business advocate, or just someone looking for a little inspiration, Matt’s journey offers practical insight—and a few laughs along the way.

Leading Brick Forward

Taking the reins as Chamber President in 2024, Matt isn’t just showing up for ribbon cuttings. He’s bringing a fresh perspective and long-term vision to the local business community. From helping welcome Icarus Brewing as a new member (and new neighbor) to laying the foundation for future growth, Matt is focused on revitalizing the Chamber after a challenging few years.

“Our whole team is rolling up our sleeves,” Matt says. “The board, our executive director—everyone is working hard to bring the Chamber back to where it used to be, and beyond.”

Matt also has his eyes on the future: once his term as president ends, he’ll transition to the Brick Chamber Foundation, helping provide scholarships to local students.

An Insurance Career Built on Trust

Matt’s professional life is rooted in his family’s legacy. He joined his father Jody Huss’s State Farm agency nearly seven years ago, diving headfirst into insurance and never looking back.

“I didn’t know a lot about insurance when I started,” he shares, “but I knew how to talk to people. I found that I really enjoy explaining things in a way that helps people make smart decisions.”

The Huss Agency, located at 474 Brick Blvd, now has a team of five and is known just as much for its customer service as it is for its policies.

“We’re not here to be the biggest,” Matt says. “We’re here to be the best when it comes to service. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll still help you find the right fit. That’s how we do business.”

And if you stop by the agency during March and mention Grit Won’t Quit, you’ll get a $20 gift card to Mulberry Street Deli—just for getting a quote.

From the Office to the Ironman

One of the most impressive parts of Matt’s story is his recent Ironman triathlon finish—140.6 miles of swimming, biking, and running.

“Fitness keeps me grounded,” he says. “I swam in high school, ran most of my life, and got into biking during COVID. The Ironman just felt like the next challenge.”

Despite a demanding job, volunteer commitments, and planning a wedding this summer, Matt trained for and completed the Ironman Maryland. His takeaway? Grit is about discipline, not perfection.

Family, Focus & the Future

Matt is the oldest of three brothers—one a retired Marine and the other in the Army on track to become a doctor. As the only one in the family insurance business, Matt is working toward taking the reins from his father.

He’s currently part of State Farm’s Agent Aspirant Program, working toward additional certifications like the Series 6 and 63 so he can one day run his own agency. “There’s no shortcut,” he says, “but I’m putting in the work so I can earn it.”

Giving Back Without Expecting Back

Through it all, Matt’s approach is rooted in something deeper than business metrics: community. Whether he’s building partnerships at the Chamber or helping a first-time homeowner understand their coverage, Matt believes in doing the right thing—even if there’s no immediate return.

“You get out of the Chamber what you put into it,” he explains. “The relationships I’ve built, the people who genuinely want to help—that’s the real reward.”
