Bridging the Gap: How Jersey Senior Weekly Is Empowering Adults 55+ with Trusted Information
When it comes to navigating retirement, healthcare, and daily life in the digital age, New Jersey seniors often find themselves left behind. That’s exactly what inspired Mike Bucca, a media veteran with two Emmys and decades of broadcast and marketing experience, to launch Jersey Senior Weekly—a free, digital-first news and resource platform tailored specifically for adults 55 and up.
On this episode of Grit Won’t Quit, host Tom sits down with Mike to talk about what sparked this mission, how his mom played a key role in shaping the platform, and why seniors are responding in droves.
From ABC Control Rooms to Senior-Focused Content
Mike’s resume reads like a media powerhouse—15 years at ABC7 in New York, time with MLB Network and WPIX, and deep roots in marketing. But his latest role is more personal. After fielding repeated calls from his mother Joanne, who struggled to find clear information on topics like Medicare and Social Security, Mike realized there was a major gap in the market.
“There was no centralized, simple source that cut through the noise,” he explains. “So I decided to build one.”
The result? A no-frills, fact-first platform that helps seniors and their families make informed decisions without the frustration of digging through dense websites or clickbait.
What Sets Jersey Senior Weekly Apart
Unlike most digital outlets, Jersey Senior Weekly skips the editorial fluff and focuses on straight facts. From financial topics like retirement planning and tax relief programs, to health issues and lifestyle content (like choosing the right pet in a 55+ community), the site is easy to navigate, accessible, and entirely free—thanks to advertisers who support the mission.
And it’s resonating. In just one month, the site attracted over 6,000 visitors and 1,400+ email subscribers.
“Our weekly email update is the heart of the platform,” says Mike. “Seniors aren’t checking websites every day, so this gives them everything they need, right in their inbox, every Monday morning.”
Local Roots, Expanding Reach
While the initial audience is concentrated in Ocean and Monmouth Counties, the platform is built for all of New Jersey—and expansion is already on Mike’s mind.
“Florida is a logical next step,” he says. “There’s a lot of crossover between the senior populations in Jersey and Florida. We’re also thinking about audio and video content, bringing in experts, and creating more interactive elements like short-form videos and even a podcast.”
Expert Voices, Not Opinions
One of the core principles behind Jersey Senior Weekly is that it’s not about opinions—it’s about verified, digestible facts. Mike brings in professionals to write or inform articles on complex topics like solar energy savings, Medicaid, and the Real ID requirement.
“I don’t pretend to know everything,” Mike says. “But I do know how to research, verify, and explain things in a way that’s clear and helpful.”
His most-read article so far? A guide on whether seniors really need a Real ID—and why the answer isn’t always yes.
Built with Accessibility in Mind
From larger font sizes to a clean, no-distractions layout, every element of the site is designed with its audience in mind.
“Simplicity is key,” Mike says. “No flashy graphics, no confusing menus. Just clear, reliable information for people who want to stay informed without feeling overwhelmed.”
Why It Matters—For Everyone
While the primary audience is over 55, Jersey Senior Weekly is also becoming a resource for adult children helping their parents navigate aging.
“Many readers are actually in their 30s, 40s, or 50s,” says Tom. “They’re trying to help their parents get the right care, the right financial advice, the right services. This platform is helping bridge that communication gap.”
A Free Resource, Thanks to Advertisers
Mike is adamant about keeping the platform 100% free for seniors. There are no subscriptions or paywalls—just valuable information, made possible by community-minded advertisers.
