Samir Popal: Networking, Fundraising, and Creating Change for Autism Support

In a recent episode of the Grit Won’t Quit podcast, host Tom welcomed Samir Popal, CEO of New Horizons in Autism, a nonprofit organization making a real difference in the lives of individuals with autism across New Jersey.

From Accountant to CEO: A Mission-Driven Journey

Samir began his journey with New Horizons in 2017, working in the accounting department. At the time, the organization operated nine homes with around 200 employees. Fast forward to today, under Samir’s leadership and with the support of a passionate board, New Horizons has doubled in size—now operating 18 homes and employing over 430 staff members.

This expansion isn’t just about numbers; it’s about meeting an urgent and growing need.

The Challenge: A Growing Population and Limited Housing

One in 37 boys in New Jersey is diagnosed with autism, and while the education system provides support through high school, many families face a stark reality upon graduation: adult services are limited, and the waiting lists are long.

Samir’s solution? More housing. “If someone walked in with a blank check, the best thing we could do is buy more homes,” he explained. These homes are not only safe places for individuals with autism to live—they’re permanently dedicated to that mission. “The homes we buy or receive as donations will always serve this community, forever.”

The Generator Initiative: A New Fundraising Push

One surprising need Samir discussed was generators. Power outages—like a recent unexpected storm—force them to evacuate homes, which can be traumatic and expensive. Each generator costs around $10,000, and Samir is hoping to launch a fundraising campaign to help equip all homes with backup power.

Wingman Planning has committed to helping Samir promote this Generator Program, and plans are in motion to gather community support, sponsorships, and resources.

How You Can Help

Whether you’re a business, a student, a tradesperson, or just someone who cares, there are lots of ways to get involved:

Career Opportunities

New Horizons is always hiring. If you’re over 21 and have a high school diploma—and a heart for helping—you could be trained and working in one of their group homes or day programs across Monmouth, Ocean, and Bergen Counties.

ABA Students Welcome

For those studying Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), New Horizons is partnered with schools like Felician University—and even offers tuition discounts for employees.

Volunteer or Join a Committee

The organization holds monthly events including comedy nights, movie nights, 5K walks, and more. There’s also a Fundraising Committee open to anyone with a desire to make a difference.

Start Your Own Fundraiser

Got a group, business, or creative idea? Samir welcomes outside initiatives. Whether it’s a fitness event, dinner, or partnership, he’s open to collaboration.

Donate a Home or Land

If you have property you’d like to dedicate to a lifelong cause, your donation could serve generations of individuals with autism.
