Tom Manfredi: Building a Family Business in a Changing Industry

Building a Family Business in a Changing Industry: The Manfredi HVAC Story

When the world shut down in 2020, most people were looking for stability. Tom Manfredi saw an opportunity. With decades of sales experience and two sons newly certified in HVAC, Tom and his wife Jen made a bold decision: to launch a family-run heating and cooling company in the middle of an uncertain time.

Today, Manfredi Heating & Air is one of the most trusted names in the region, with a 4.9-star rating on Google and a growing team of professionals who treat each job like it’s being done in their own home.

Starting Small, Growing with Grit

What started as weekend side jobs quickly grew into a full-fledged business. Tom’s sons, trained at respected HVAC schools, began installing and servicing systems while Tom focused on customer relationships and sales. From the beginning, the company was built on one core principle: do the right thing.

“We walk into someone’s home as a guest,” Tom explains. “It’s our job to treat it that way. Booties on. Drop cloths down. Communicate clearly. And leave it cleaner than we found it.”

Competing in the Age of Private Equity

The HVAC industry has seen a surge in private equity acquisitions, with mid-sized companies being bundled and streamlined under large corporate umbrellas. But Tom believes the human touch is what sets a business apart—and why Manfredi Heating & Air continues to grow.

“Private equity guys are smart,” he says. “But they run by the spreadsheet. We run by referrals and reputation.”

That customer-first mindset has opened doors for Manfredi Heating & Air, especially as larger companies lose local trust. Homeowners are choosing personalized service and integrity over national branding and automation.

Family, Integrity, and Local Collaboration

What makes the Manfredi story unique is its family foundation. Jen runs operations, the sons are in the field, and Tom leads sales and strategy. But growth hasn’t stopped there. The team now includes seasoned technicians outside the family and continues to expand by collaborating with local builders and contractors.

“Our first builder became three. Hopefully, three becomes six,” Tom says. “These partnerships help us stay consistent with work and build something sustainable.”

In the future, Tom envisions acquiring another similarly sized company—not through private equity, but by preserving the values that matter most to him and his customers.

Long-Term Thinking in a Tech-Driven Trade

HVAC systems today aren’t what they were 20 years ago. They’re complex, computer-driven machines. Homeowners can’t rely on DIY fixes for their ductless units or tankless water heaters. That’s where Manfredi Heating & Air comes in—with the expertise to install, maintain, and educate.

“We always tell our customers—we’re not just installing your system and walking away,” Tom says. “We’re coming back in the off-season to make sure everything’s working. And we offer maintenance plans so your system lasts as long as it should.”

Lessons from the Journey

Running a family business isn’t easy. From payroll to weather delays, Tom admits that stress comes with the territory. But he wouldn’t trade the journey. “I learn something new every day,” he says. “The day you stop learning is the day you fall behind.”

Looking back, Tom wouldn’t change industries. He’d maybe make a few smarter moves along the way—but he’s proud of what he and his family have built. And with his sons involved, he knows the values of service, trust, and quality will continue for years to come.

Looking for HVAC You Can Trust?

Manfredi Heating & Air offers residential and light commercial HVAC services in Farmingdale, NJ, and surrounding areas. Whether you’re installing a new system, upgrading to tankless, or just need dependable maintenance—Tom and his team are ready to help.
