From Pain to Purpose: How Hot Yoga Helped Tracy Zarriello Build a Healing Community
A conversation about healing, movement, and choosing yourself
When life knocks you down, the hardest first step is often the one that gets you back in motion. In this episode of Grit Won’t Quit, Tom sits with Tracy Zarriello of Smoking Hot Yoga to talk about how one of the toughest periods of her life led to a new chapter built on strength, stillness, and community. Tracy had been scheduled for back surgery twice after debilitating pain and loss. On a friend’s nudge, she tried hot yoga. That single decision changed everything. The pain eased, her mindset shifted, and a new purpose took root: build a space where people can move, breathe, and leave better than they arrived.
What makes hot yoga different
Hot yoga classes at Smoking Hot Yoga take place in a heated room that uses infrared heat. This is not a sauna blast. Infrared heating creates a steady, comfortable warmth that penetrates to the joints and helps muscles open as you move. For athletes and beginners alike, the heat can support flexibility and reduce stiffness so poses feel more accessible. The best part for many students is the mind–body link that shows up once the distractions fall away. There are no phones in the studio, no shoes, and the front door locks when class begins. You get an hour to be fully present.
Benefits students notice first
Greater mobility: The gentle heat supports deeper stretching and smoother transitions.
Reduced tension: Movement paired with breath helps release stress that builds up through the day.
Mental clarity: Every class starts with an intention, which gives your mind a focus and your practice a purpose.
Community energy: People show up to work on themselves, and they cheer for each other. That energy is contagious.
Tracy’s turning point
Tracy shares candidly about a season marked by grief and physical pain. She could barely manage stairs, and the idea of surgery felt wrong in her gut. A friend convinced her to “just come and lie on the mat.” That low-pressure invitation unlocked a path back to herself. Within months, she noticed real change. Her doctor told her the herniation likely moved back into place. More importantly, yoga gave her a quiet place to process, breathe, and choose how to move forward.
“In the beginning of yoga there is always a message or intention. Mine was simple. I need to be okay. I have another son. I run businesses. I have to show up.”
From first class to first lease
The transformation did not stop at the edge of Tracy’s mat. She kept showing up, then started dreaming bigger. An empty storefront caught her eye while grabbing breakfast. The vision was clear, and she protected it from outside noise. She opened the corporation, signed the lease, and got to work. Life still threw curveballs. Two weeks after signing, her fiancé was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He is now doing well, and that challenge only reinforced her commitment. The studio went from idea to reality because Tracy believed in what it could mean for others.
Inside Smoking Hot Yoga
The studio reflects Tracy’s construction background and her love of details that tell a story. In the center of the practice room hangs a hand-crafted chandelier made from a tree she literally dragged out of the woods, cleaned, and transformed. The result is a warm, organic focal point that feels like a symbol: growth is possible in every season.
Classes that meet you where you are
Smoking Hot Yoga offers more than hot yoga flows. The schedule blends strength, stretch, and stillness so students can build a routine that fits real life.
Hot Conditioning
Sculpt
Mat Pilates
Targeted band and core classes
Weekend Pilates with a licensed therapist and school counselor
Occasional sound bath and meditation sessions
Every class includes a short message or intention. The goal is always the same. Leave calmer than you arrived. Leave stronger than you think.
The power of a no-judgment room
Students often say the hardest part is putting the phone in the cubby and closing the door. Tracy designed the experience to give people permission to be fully present. If you need to rest, you rest. If you need to move, you move. New friendships form in the lobby. People remember each other’s names. On Sundays, someone might show up with bagels after Pilates because wellness can make room for joy.
When grit meets grace
Tracy built and ran service businesses for years, including a woman-owned chimney and HVAC company. She loved the work but felt the passion fade. Yoga reignited it. She is now transitioning out of day-to-day operations to grow the studio. The long-term dream is to build more locations so more people can access affordable, welcoming hot yoga. Pricing and promotions change over time, yet the studio keeps membership simple and approachable, with community at the center.
Getting started if you are new to hot yoga
Bring water and a towel. You will sweat, and that is part of the process.
Show up ten minutes early. You will have time to settle, breathe, and set an intention.
Listen to your body. Rest is a pose. Progress comes from consistency.
Stay for the final moments. Savasana helps your nervous system lock in the benefits of class.
Keep your phone outside. Give yourself the gift of a focused hour.
